Deferred Action could help to combat crime- Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), President Obama’s program that provides a temporary reprieve for young undocumented immigrants, could have an unexpected effect other than providing applicants with better job opportunities.

Arpaio's challenger promises different approach to immigration- Paul Penzone, the newest challenger to longtime Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s 20-year tenure, is likely to provide the biggest challenge that the 80-year old incumbent has seen in years.

This conference,  Realizing the Economic Strength of Our 21st Century Border: Trade, Education, and Jobs, will examine the important economic relatnionship between the United States and Mexico.  

NDN Founder and President Simon Rosenberg will moderate the panel Enhancing Tourism Between the U.S. and Mexico on Monday, September 24th. This panel will examine the important economic relationship between Mexico and the United States in the travel industry.  

The U.S.-Mexico trade relationship is a critical pillar of both nations' economies. The two nations reached $500 billion in two-way trade in goods and services in 2011, and over 6 million jobs in the United States depend on trade with Mexico.

The conference will be held at the Fiesta Resort Center in Tempe, Arizona from September 23 – 25, 2012. Joining Simon are fellow panelists Luis Alfonso Lugo, Under Secretary of Tourism Operations, Mexico Ministry of Tourism; John T. Today, Kristian Ramos, Policy Director of NDN's 21st Century Border Initiative released the following statement on progress made in the implementation of President Barack Obama's Deferred Action program.

"NDN is proud to hear that 72,000 undocumented immigrants have already applied for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a program that provides a temporary reprieve for undocumented immigrants who are approved.

It is inspiring to see the positive impact of President Obama's bold decision to grant temporary relief to young immigrants without criminal records who were brought to America before the age of 16.

Giving these immigrants a temporary reprieve and the ability to apply for legal work status is smart, fair policy that will help our economy.

This week the first approvals for applicants for DACA will be granted. The President and his Administration should be commended for their judicious move on this important initiative.  By giving DREAM Act eligible immigrants the ability to apply for temporary relief from deportation, the President has allowed the Department of Homeland Security to better focus their efforts on deporting criminal immigrants.

We look forward to future action from the Administration in partnership with Congress on a broader overhaul of our immigration system and greater investment in the Southwest border region."

Official figures show that over 72,000 have applied for deferred action- Almost one month after the implementation of President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, the first results have been released by the administration. According to senior immigration officials, more than 72,000 undocumented youths have applied for temporary reprieve.

U.S. border security continues to grow even as undocumented migration falls- Although undocumented immigration is at its lowest point in over 40 years, experts say there’s no end in sight for the growth of security along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Romney endorses immigration hardliner- The Romney campaign has once again attracted criticism for its approach to immigration in light of Romney’s endorsement of immigration hardliner Rep. Steve King (R-IA) Friday.

Applications slow for deferred action- According to government officials and those familiar with the program, deferred action applications have been slowed by applicants’ concerns about what they must disclose and who will be the next president.

Department of Justice not to charge Arpaio, civil case continues- The U.S. Department of Justice announced Friday that it would not pursue criminal charges against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio or his office for abuse of power.

Middle-class Mexicans buying more products made in U.S.- Mexico’s growing middle class, which is quickly becoming the nation’s majority, is buying more U.S. goods than ever. Trade between the U.S. and Mexico is booming, up 17 percent in 2011 to a record $461 billion as Mexico vies with China to become America’s second-largest trading partner after Canada.

Border Patrol halts deportation flights to Mexico- The U.S. government has decided to halt flights back to Mexico for illegal immigrants caught entering the country illegally.
