Border security and the immigration debate- The recent announcements by President Barack Obama and a bipartisan group of senators outlining broad principles for immigration reform are very welcome. However, the Senate outline conditions reforms–particularly a pathway to citizenship–on achieving a poorly defined and much misunderstood notion of “securing the border.”

GOP shift on immigration continues- With notable speed after the Nov. 6 presidential election, a number of Republican politicians and opinions makers — from House Speaker John A. Boehner to the talk show host Sean Hannity — altered their positions on immigration and expressed a new openness to comprehensive reform.

Immigration push to begin in earnest after SOTU- Assured and galvanized by his speech in Las Vegas, immigration overhaul advocates don’t expect to hear anything new on the issue from President Barack Obama in his State of the Union address Tuesday.
