NDN Statement on New Immigration Framework

For Immediate Release: April 29, 2010

Senate Democrats Show Much-Needed Leadership on Immigration Reform
Framework Demonstrates a Serious Desire to Fix Our Broken Immigration System, Engage Republicans in the Process

Washington, DC - Today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), and Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) introduced a legislative framework for immigration reform.  As the eyes of the country focus on Arizona, this effort by Senate Democrats provides a path forward for both parties to work together to pass comprehensive reform.

In light of these developments, NDN's President Simon Rosenberg released the following statement:

"This proposal represents a critical step forward.  AZ SB 1070 sounded a national wake-up call and forced the Federal government to stop hitting snooze."

"In 2006, twenty-two Republican Senators voted for Comprehensive Immigration Reform.  Eleven of those Senators are still in office today.  With this middle-of-the-road proposal, their Senate colleagues are offering them an incredible opportunity to join them in demonstrating strong leadership on this important issue."
