Since late last year NDN has been working hard to pass McCain-Kennedy, the best of all proposals to reform our broken immigration system. This approach has the support of a remarkable and diverse coalition that includes labor, business and many immigration groups; had deep bi-partisan backing, including all 44 Democratic Senators; and recently passed the Senate Judiciary Committee with broad bi-partisan support. In an era of intense partisanship, this bill has been a model for how both parties can come together to solve tough national problems.

Unfortunately, Republican leaders in Washington, bowing to pressure from elements of their base, have been working to undermine this bi-partisan compromise. Senator Frist has championed an alternative bill that would weaken the most important provisions of McCain-Kennedy; the House passed an extreme bill that would felonize, arrest and deport all 11 million undocumented immigrants, sparking the recent demonstrations across the country; and the RNC launched an ad campaign accusing Democrats of what the Republicans have done - attempting to kick millions of hard working people out of the country - another in their series of big lies.

For those of us supporting the bi-partisan McCain-Kennedy bill it has become clear in recent months that the Republican leadership in Washington is more serious about scoring political points then they are about solving this important national challenge. And that's why NDN has launched a new issue advocacy campaign encouraging the Republican leadership - who control the government of the United States - to stop playing games with people's lives and get serious about passing McCain-Kennedy this year.

The new ad, "How Little They Know Us", began running in late April on Spanish language radio stations in Arizona, California, Nevada, Texas and Washington, DC. Starting Tuesday, May 16th, it expanded to 18 key markets in Phoenix, Tucson, Fayetteville, El Centro, Fresno, Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Sacramento, San Francisco, Stockton, Aspen, Denver, Las Vegas, Reno, Austin, Dallas, Houston and Lubbock.  The campaign will air on the syndicated Spanish-language radio programs El Piolin and El Cucuy, which rank among the most popular programs in the country, and whose DJs have played a leading role in the coalition working for comprehensive reform.

If you approve of our work to pass comprehensive immigration reform, you can support us by clicking on the link on the right; email others about this compelling ad and ask them to join our campaign; by learning more about this issue on www.ndn.org; and letting your elected leaders know how much you would like them to work with NDN and Senators McCain and Kennedy in passing comprehensive immigration reform this year.

As always, thanks for your support and interest in our work, and feel free to offer your thoughts on www.ndnblog.org.
