Two Million Strong, and Growing

Tuesday, August 26, 2008
2:00 PM

Event Summary:

At 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26, NDN will host an event at the Westin Tabor Center discussing the impact of new media technologies in politics. Joining us will be:

Joe Trippi, a longtime NDN friend and New Politics Institute fellow who was also the top campaign strategist for John Edwards's presidential bid this cycle. Trippi has run and consulted on numerous presidential, senate, congressional, gubernatorial and mayoral races. These include the successful campaigns of U.S. Senator Alan Cranston of California, Mayor Tom Bradley of Los Angeles, Governor Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, and Congressman Tim Holden of Pennsylvania. In 2004, as the National Campaign Manager for Howard Dean’s presidential campaign, Trippi pioneered the use of online technology to organize what became the largest grassroots movement in presidential politics. Through his innovative use of the Internet for small-donor fundraising, “Dean for America” raised more money than any Democratic presidential campaign to that point – all with donations averaging less than $100.

Peter Greenberger, Director of Google's Politics and Issue Advocacy, will focus on how campaigns in 2008 are using the internet to target voters. Peter joined Google in May 2007 to build and manage a new Elections & Issue Advocacy sales team dedicated to introducing Google solutions to political campaigns, committees, and issue advocacy groups. Previously, Peter grew the public affairs division of New Media Strategies, a Web 2.0 marketing firm, working with clients such as the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Discovery Networks, Ford Motor Company, the Granholm for Governor campaign, Merck, Inc., Wachovia, the Washington Redskins, and XM Satellite Radio.

Joe Rospars, New Media Director, Obama for America. Joe supervises a staff of technologists and strategists who continue to break records in online fundraising and grassroots mobilization. Joe leads a team that has set a new standard for campaigns with a wide-ranging program that includes multimedia content, web and print design, text messaging, mass email, online advertising, and online organizing both on the campaign's own social network, My.BarackObama.com, and on sites like Facebook, MySpace and BlackPlanet.
