Event Summary:

At 1:30 p.m. on Monday, August 25, NDN will host an event on immigration at the Hilton Garden Inn and will feature:

Janet Murguia, who since January of 2005 has been President and CEO of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S. Murguía is currently a Board member of the Independent Sector, a coalition of leading nonprofits, foundations, and corporations committed to connecting, informing, and advocating on behalf of the nonprofit and philanthropic community. She is also a member of the Merrill Lynch Diversity & Inclusion Council and is an executive committee member of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights. In addition, Murguía sits on the Board of the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility and the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda.

Janet will will speak to the need for Comprehensive Immigration Reform and provide guidance on how to effectively advocate to public and private decision makers in order to ensure that the next Administration and Legislature enacts the necessary overhaul of the current flawed immigration system. She will also remark on the civil rights issues tied into immigration reform and the impact the existing enforcement-only strategy has had on Hispanic families across the country.

Frank Sharry, who up until recently served as the Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum. The Forum, based in Washington D.C., is one of the nation’s premier immigration policy organizations, and has been at the center of every major legislative and policy debate related to immigration over the past 25 years. Frank Sharry is currently starting up a new organization called America’s Voice. The mission of America’s Voice is to speak up for the majority of Americans that support broad immigration reform rooted in the American values of earned citizenship, the rule of law, and the promise of the American Dream. America’s Voice will fulfill this purpose by serving as the communications war room and campaign integration hub of a nationwide effort aimed at winning broad immigration reform.

Frank will provide his perspective on the policy and political challenges of comprehensive immigration reform. As he speaks before an audience of advocacy groups, private and public decision-makers, Mr. Sharry will provide insight on polling data on immigration, as well as on how advocates and elected officials can effectively rally support behind a broad immigration reform effort in order to obtain necessary changes in the U.S. immigration system under the next Administration.

U.S. Representative Zoe Lofgren (CA-16), Chair of the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security and International Law. After having held extensive hearings on everything from visa quotas to detainee medical care, the Congresswoman will share her knowledge of the challenges that the next administration will face in dealing with the existing immigration system and in any attempt to pass comprehensive immigration reform, as well as how to meet those challenges.

Marco Lopez, Jr, Director of the Arizona State Dept of Commerce. In 2000, Lopez was elected Mayor of the city of Nogales, Arizona – at the age of 22 years old, he was one of the youngest mayors in the United States. He was re-elected to that job by an overwhelming margin in 2002. Lopez then joined state government as Executive Director of the Arizona-Mexico Commission, an organization essential to developing international policy, and in enhancing the economic power of the Arizona-Sonora region. In recent years, the AMC has been responsible for improvements to Arizona’s Ports of Entry, as well as a dramatic increase in cooperation between law enforcement agencies on both sides of the international border.

Andres Ramirez, Vice President of Hispanic Programs for NDN.
