NDN at NCLR in San Diego
Tuesday, July 15 8:30 AM
Location:
San Diego Convention Center Room 25A 111 W. Harbor Drive San Diego, CA 92101
Event Summary:
At 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 15, NDN's own Andres Ramirez will speak on a panel called "Latino Voters: Making Their Mark on the 2008 Election"at the annual NCLR Conference in San Diego, California. This session will explore the idea that the presidential candidate that understands and addresses issues that are relevant to Latino voters stands to gain a significant advantage in their quest for the White House. While some candidates understand the power of the Latino vote, others choose to neglect the fastest-growing major segment of the U.S. population. Various factors enhance the importance and potential of the Latino vote in the 2008 presidential election: several swing states have large Hispanic populations; large-scale, experienced voter registration and mobilization campaigns are heavily targeting Latino voters; and the presence of immigration as a major issue for the Latino electorate. NCLR's civic engagement initiative, the Latino Empowerment and Advocacy Project (LEAP), has convened a group of nationally-renowned experts to present their analysis of Latino demographics, registration and voting patterns, and the multitude of issues that motivate Latino voters.
Participants will leave the workshop with: -an overview of the nature, size, and potential of the Latino electorate -an understanding of the key issues and messages that mobilize Latino voters -potential avenues for the Latino community to have impact in this year's election
