The Progressive Moment
On Wednesday, November 8th, the American people voted for new leadership, rejecting the failed governing philosophy of conservatism. This is our opportunity. This is our progressive moment; and it begins today. We are in a distinct period, and until January 2009, with the inauguration of the next President, we must work to convince the country once again, as we did during the 1990s, that progressives offer a better path. NDN recognizes that no one group can put forth all the ideas needed to meet the challenge of governing. That is why NDN is proud to share the work of individuals and organizations that are thought leaders in this emerging progressive moment. We hope you'll learn about and support their work, and email us to share names that may be missing from this list.

The CAP Action Fund offers recommendation for new policies that the 110th Congress should take on before the August recess, after the first 100 hours. In the weeks and months after those first hours, Congress will have an opportunity to make progress on fixing the problems Americans face. Instead of following the traditional course of an initial burst of activity followed by months of less action, the Congressional leadership can continue to work to meet the needs of the American people by passing important legislation in the spring and summer.

"If America is going to be 1st,we have to make a decision to be 1st. The fact is, America has been the world leader in scientific and technological innovation because we were committed to being the best and most competitive economy in the world. But the challenge to our economic leadership from new players like India, China and others requires a dramatic new commitment on our part. "
- Speaker-elect Rep. Nancy Pelosi

Written by two of the most popular political bloggers in America, Crashing the Gate hails the new movement—of the netroots, the grassroots, the unorthodox labor unions, the maverick big donors—that is the antidote to old-school politics as usual. Fueled by advances in technology and a hunger for a more authentic and populist democracy, this broad-based movement is changing the way political campaigns are waged and managed. A must-read book for anyone with an interest in the future of American democracy.

“The American people have spoken and they have demanded change. They want, they deserve, and they are going to get a new direction—at home and in Iraq. Americans chose Democrats because we fought for the people and we fought for change. Now the Congress must honor that choice with a new beginning."
- Senate Majority Leader-elect Sen. Harry Reid

In Whistling Past Dixie, Tom Schaller issues a transformative challenge to Democrats: Build a winning coalition outside the South.
The South is no longer the "swing" region in American politics -- it has swung to the Republicans. Most of the South is beyond the Democrats' reach, and what remains is moving steadily into the Republican column. The twin effects of race and religion produce a socially conservative, electorally hostile environment for most Democratic candidates. |

Consistent with its broad economic strategy, the Project is putting forward iinnovative policy ideas from leading economic thinkers—ideas based on evidence and experience, not ideology and doctrine. The Project's economic strategy is built on three principles: that broad-based economic growth is stronger and more sustainable, that economic security and economic growth can be mutually reinforcing, and that effective government can enhance economic growth.
